Ways to Deal with Social Media Envy
Social media is a great way to connect with those you love from miles away. It allows you to keep in touch with those you do not see regularly and make plans with those you live near. However, it can be draining to see posts of friends and acquaintances your age get engaged or married, earn promotions or awards, or go epic places that you cannot afford. This experience often leads to emotional problems and forces many to compare themselves to others. There are ways to healthily deal with these emotions without leaving social media permanently.
1. Keep in mind that people only post their best selves on social media
While there are definitely exceptions to this rule, most people only post the best things about their lives on social media, especially if they use it solely to market themselves to future employers. They want to paint themselves in a positive light and showcase only their accomplishments, not their struggles. Keeping this in mind can be difficult but is so important. Everyone goes through difficult experiences, even those who appear to have it all together on social media.
2. Disconnect from social media for a bit
You do not have to deactivate your accounts, but taking some time away from social media can help you reconnect to what is important to you and can give you time to focus on yourself and your own goals. This can help you refocus on the positive in your life and to see how far you have truly come without being distracted. Make a list of things you want to get done during your social media “fast” and work towards it. Use this time to surround yourself with those you love and those who support you. They will be able to remind you that you are doing amazing things and that they are proud of you.
3. Make a list of the good things about yourself
It can be easy to compare yourself to others or wonder why you are not accomplishing the same things others are. Make a list of things you have accomplished or incredible memories you have had recently. Chances are somebody on your social media feeds is jealous of something on this list. It is likely that you have done more than you think you have. Ask your friends and family members to add to the list- they know you best and truly see how hard you work and have watched your growth over the years.
